All municipal and private companies understand the importance of maintaining an uninterrupted electrical supply. This level of importance only increases during storms and other critical events. It is imperative that all pivotal operations remain online. If a facility’s power goes offline, a state of emergency would surely follow. Installing an emergency generator is a fail-safe in the event of a power outage from the main supply.  Emergency generators may be stationary or portable and have a wide range of features available to suit individual facility’s needs.

Funding Opportunities

As discussed in a previous blog, $1 Billion was set aside by New York State in the 2017 round of funding (now closed) to improve and maintain infrastructure related to water treatment and supply. Funding is often available through similar grant programs at various times throughout the year, to allow for individual municipalities and companies to improve their emergency response capabilities. Municipalities have a plethora of issues to attend to, from water supply to emergency response. Emergency generators help keep a bad situation from getting worse.

Choosing the Right Generator for Your Needs

Grants are intended to only cover only a portion of the costs of an individual project, with matching funds from the successful applicant. Therefore, the installation of generators must be efficient in covering the facility’s needs, reliable and cost effective. Finding the right generator for the job can be tricky. Determining the proper characteristics of the generator depends on the electrical demands, the level of importance of the facility, location, etc.

For example, a Water Department’s booster station is needed to distribute water throughout its supply area. This process requires a large source of energy due to the need to power various machines. The generator being used to power a booster station needs enough current to handle the facility’s load and must be able to operate for an extended period of time. A generator with too little amperage or an insufficient fuel supply may not keep the facility in operation until power is restored.
