Walden President Participates in Lafayette College Lacrosse Virtual Career Day

by | Oct 13, 2022

On October 6, Walden’s president and founder, Joseph Heaney, presented at Lafayette College’s Virtual Career Day. This event was attended by the men’s lacrosse team, which split into two groups: the freshmen and sophomores participated in a session that gave them some background on resumes and the interview process, and the juniors and seniors attended a parallel session that went more in depth on resumes, networking, and the process of screening, researching, and finding a job. Joe Heaney led the session for the upperclassmen along with fellow Lafayette alumni Thomas Perini, relationship manager at AllianceBernstein’s Strategic Relationship Group, and Nkrumah Pierre, managing director at EisnerAmper.

In their presentation, Joe, Nkrumah, and Thomas discussed how to find a job, where to apply, how networking can help you land a job, and how to properly present yourself through a warm resume and cover letter. The presentation gave the students a better understanding of what they should consider in applying to job positions in terms of their interests, ideal geographic locations, and how they can use their alumni and lacrosse network to identify career paths and find key personnel within a specific organization.

They discussed the importance of getting to know the companies you will be applying to and if your interests align with their values, as well as if they have the job that will fit your current skill set, knowledge, and personality. It is also important to explore the target companies’ culture to judge fit and ensure that it matches your professional goals.

In terms of networking, they talked about how to use resources such as LinkedIn and alumni relations to build professional relationships. They also discussed how you can present yourself through a warm resume that will set you apart from the other applicants and greatly increase your chances of receiving a response. Finally, they covered how to prepare for an interview using your network, professors, and the company website, so that you will be able to effectively express your interest. Knowing more about the firm will allow you to present yourself more professionally.

Career Day was a great opportunity for the students to learn more about the job seeking process. These types of events give Walden an opportunity to connect with students and give them a better understanding on how to land job positions. They also allow us to provide insights to these upcoming young professionals about what to expect when they start looking for work experience, as well as guidance as they are going through this process.
