Multiple Environmental Services for a Facility in Bronx, New York

Walden provided a multi-task professional engineering and professional geology service to a Bronx facility operating multiple boilers to generate heat and steam for residential consumers.

Initially, Walden’s assistance to the client was related to obtaining all necessary air permits due to a mandatory NYC DEP requirement to convert the boiler fuel from #6 fuel oil (residual oil) to a “cleaner” #2 fuel oil (distillate oil). This project entailed working on different levels of air permitting: local, State and Federal.

Since the boilers were serviced by underground storage tanks (UST), Walden was also able to provide assistance in order for the facility to comply with all construction, environmental and health and safety requirements from both NYSDEC and EPA Petroleum Bulk Storage (PBS) regulations. Walden guided and coordinated with the client and all involved contractors/vendors to achieve compliance throughout all the design and construction phases of the project in relation to the UST system.

In addition, the UST system was subject to an investigation to characterize soil contamination due to releases from the tanks.  Walden’s scope of services was expanded to help the facility to conduct the site investigation by overseeing and directing drilling, excavation activities and installation of monitoring wells, performing groundwater and soil sampling, coordinating with all regulatory agencies involved, and providing the client with solutions for a satisfactory outcome of such investigation and related remediation activities.

Walden remains ready to further expand the environmental and engineering services for this client during miscellaneous design and construction projects planned at the facility.  These services may include providing assistance on multiple health and safety requirements including site specific Health and Safety Planning (HASP), Community Air Monitoring Program (CAMP) and site inspections.

This project reflects the variety of services and competencies that Walden can provide to our clients, assisting them in many different correlated tasks that can arise during the course of a project. Walden’s interdisciplinary expertise ranging from civil and environmental engineering to professional geological services, from air emissions to UST permitting and compliance, from site investigation to site remediation activities, can help clients avoid hiring different consulting firms that can cause increases in budgets and/or difficulties in communications and delays in delivering results when timing might be of the essence.
