Are you worried about your impact on the planet? The easiest way to minimize your carbon footprint this week is to participate in Car-Free Day Long Island on September 22nd. This event, sponsored by several public transit organizations including Transit Solutions, The Long Island Road and Suffolk Transit, is an international event celebrated every September in which people are encouraged to forgo their normal vehicular modes of transportation and instead think green. Rather than driving, citizens are encouraged to ride a train, bicycle, carpool, a subway or walk to work. The intention behind the event is to make the public more conscious about their energy usage in hopes that it will minimize the world’s overall carbon footprint and provide a more energy efficient place for future generations.

Participating is easy. Simply pledge to be car free by filling out this pledge form located on the Car-Free Long Island website, it’s that simple! Additionally, participants are automatically entered for a chance to win great prizes such as transit tickets across various platforms and luxury bicycles provided by Brands Cycle and Fitness.

Are you unsure of how to leave the car at home? The Car Free Day website has you covered! They provide a list of regional resources to help participants be Car Free or Car-Lite. These resources include a variety of public transit timetables across multiple platforms including trains, busses and suggestions on how to find carpool buddies.

Last year, Car Free Day made history by being celebrated in over 2000 cities in 40 countries around the world. This coming Thursday will mark the 4th annual Car-Free day Long Island has seen.
