EPA Adds Additional PFAS to the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI)

by | Oct 23, 2025

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced the recent addition of sodium perfluorohexanesulfonate (PFHxS-Na) (CAS 82382-12-5) to the list of chemicals covered by the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI).

This update follows the addition of nine PFAS earlier this year, also pursuant to the Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which mandates the automatic inclusion of certain PFAS once EPA finalizes toxicity values for them. The latest addition is based on EPA’s 2025 IRIS Toxicological Review of Perfluorohexanesulfonic Acid (PFHxS, CASRN 335-46-4) and Related Salts, which established a toxicity value for PFHxS-Na.

While PFHxS and other related salts were already on the TRI list, PFHxS-Na was not previously included. Under the requirements of the NDAA, the finalization of the IRIS assessment triggered the automatic addition of PFHxS-Na to the TRI. This addition will become effective on January 1, 2026, increasing the total number of PFAS that are subject to TRI reporting to 206.

What Does This Mean for You?

You’ve likely heard a lot about PFAS contamination and remediation recently, and for good reason. New and upcoming regulations and monitoring requirements stem from EPA’s ongoing effort to identify and minimize the use of these toxic chemicals across all industries.

Facilities that manufacture, process, or otherwise use TRI-listed chemicals above certain thresholds must report releases and waste management practices annually to the EPA. This information is compiled into the public TRI database, promoting transparency and enabling local communities, regulators, and industry leaders to make informed decisions about chemical use and management.
