OSHA’s 2026 Safe & Sound Week: How Effective Are Your Safety Programs?

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA’s) Safe & Sound Week returns August 10–16, 2026. While many organizations participate through training and toolbox talks, OSHA is also encouraging employers to take a closer look at the effectiveness of their health and safety programs.

A written safety program is only effective if employees understand it, follow it, and feel comfortable participating in the process. Over time, even well-developed programs can become outdated as equipment, personnel, and workplace conditions change. Safe & Sound Week is a great opportunity for employers to step back and evaluate whether their safety programs work in practice, not just on paper.

How You Can Participate

To test the effectiveness of a safety program, employers should evaluate:

• Employee involvement in hazard reporting
• Training content
• Housekeeping/facility conditions
• PPE availability and use
• Inspection procedures
• Safety committee meeting minutes
• Near miss reporting and follow up

Participation does not need to be complicated to be meaningful. Simple activities such as conducting a facility walkthrough or reviewing emergency procedures can help reinforce a stronger safety culture across the organization.
