Walden’s growth is continuing, and we are delighted to welcome three new employees to the team! Hekmat Alizai, Accounts Payable Clerk; Nicholas Piarulli, Project Scientist I; and Joel Thomas, Project Engineer I (Piarulli and Thomas, pictured from left to right) have all recently started in Walden’s Long Island office. Get to know each new employee a little bit more below!

Nicholas Piarulli

Piarulli is a recent graduate of Binghamton University, having attained his Bachelor of Science in Geology this past spring. Some of the key courses he completed at Binghamton include geophysics, where he used geophones to conduct seismic tests, and geomorphology, where he determined the origin and composition of soils and strategized landslide prevention measures.

Piarulli is working to expand his knowledge of geology as an active member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. He is also a longtime resident of Oyster Bay and has been involved in the community for many years, serving as captain of the lacrosse and hockey teams at Oyster Bay High School in his senior year and working at Pine Hollow Country Club as a Course Maintenance Technician.

Joel Thomas

Thomas graduated from Drexel University in the spring of 2023, earning his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering with a Minor in Business Administration. He is currently working toward his Master of Science in Engineering Management, also at Drexel.

While an undergraduate, Thomas completed several engineering internships, where he gained experience in water and transportation engineering. He completed an engineering co-op with the Philadelphia Water Department, helping to perform facility inspections and completing weekly water sampling and evaluation tasks.

Thomas is a proficient user of AutoCAD and MicroStation, having worked in these programs intensively in his prior roles to create designs for treatment plants, pumping systems, green infrastructure, and traffic control plans. He is also experienced at analyzing data and managing projects.

Hekmat Alizai

Alizai joins Walden’s accounting department in a part-time role while concurrently working toward his Master of Science in Taxation from Hofstra University. He also holds an MBA in Finance from Hofstra, which he completed in May of this year. Alizai aspires to take the CPA exam in the summer of 2025 after he earns his M.S.

He has experience with bookkeeping, editing, and supervision and is skilled in critical writing, polished communication, and QuickBooks. In the spring of 2024, Alizai worked as a Finance and Accounting Intern for the Boys and Girls Club of America, where he gained experience with employee reimbursement, report preparation, and invoice management and reconciliation for both Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable.
