Walden Day

Being an active participant in the community is a huge priority at Walden. That is why each year we dedicate our company anniversary to serving our community. We find it important to take a break from our day-to-day environment, and get tuned in to the needs of organizations that are making a positive impact on the world around us. This year, while our Oyster Bay office had its day of service in June (right around Walden’s anniversary), our Hudson Valley and Connecticut staff participated in their own volunteer day this past Friday!

Pegasus Therapeutic Riding

This year, we elected to host Walden Day North at Pegasus Therapeutic Riding, as they are always looking for volunteers to help fulfill their mission. Pegasus Therapeutic Riding’s mission is to “enhance the lives of individuals who have disabilities and challenges through equine-assisted activities and education.” Pegasus Therapeutic Riding opened in 1975. It serves people of all ages with physical, developmental, social, and emotional challenges. Equine-assisted activities incorporate horses into the therapeutic process. Horses often mirror a client’s behavior or emotions, conveying understanding and connection that allows the client to feel safe. At Pegasus Therapeutic Riding, people are able to engage in activities such as grooming, feeding, and riding horses while being supervised. Through this form of therapy, people are able to develop skills such as emotional regulation, self-confidence, and responsibility.

During Walden Day, Pegasus Therapeutic Riding needed help with planting flower bulbs, replacing horse fencing, and building a garden bed. Walden employees arrived ready to get the job done! We split up into three groups and spent the day accomplishing the tasks.

The first group was able to help plant about 1000 flower bulbs along the parking lot. The second group replaced weathered sections of horse fencing. The old fencing was removed and new sections were installed and painted black. The third group designed and constructed a wood garden bed bordering the parking lot.

Walden is proud to partner with organizations like Pegasus Therapeutic Riding, which help the community. We strive to continuously be positive contributors to our community at large. If you are interested in reading more about Pegasus Therapeutic Riding, check out their website here!
