Walden Environmental Engineering, PLLC Awards Engineering Scholarship
In the world of engineering, a quality high school education sets the foundation for higher learning and one’s career. Those who take their education seriously deserve to be rewarded. Therefore, Joseph M. Heaney III, P.E., President of Walden Environmental Engineering and resident of Oyster Bay, awards an engineering scholarship to the best-qualified Oyster Bay High School graduating senior.
The engineering scholarship is awarded to the student who demonstrates the characteristics needed to become a successful engineer. This year’s engineering competition asked students to solve a problem related to their school in Oyster Bay, NY. Walden staff members were impressed by all the submissions, citing high-level critical thinking and professional presentations.
2017 Scholarship Recipient
This year’s competition and scholarship winner is Owen Zahradnik. Owen participated in Lacrosse, Winter Track, and Basketball at Oyster Bay High School. Owen excelled in all his classes but specifically enjoyed the arts and history, two areas in which aspiring engineers are not known for their interest but that help develop critical thinking. Also, during the past two summers, Owen worked full-time as a camp counselor, tapping into his leadership abilities at a young age. Overall, Owen demonstrated scholarly excellence while participating in sports and managing a part time job, which impressed Joe Heaney.
This fall, Owen will be attending the State University of New York (SUNY) at Binghamton, where he plans to enroll in either the Mechanical or Electrical Engineering program. Owen currently intends to pursue a career in the music industry focusing on sound board engineering and acoustic engineering.
Owen also interned with Walden allowing him to experience engineering work first hand. Over that time, Owen learned that engineering consultants “help people through investigation and then give advice thereafter”.
Owen’s time at Walden was well spent and the staff at Walden wishes him the best of luck continuing his education and moving towards his goal of an engineering career.
