Walden is pleased to announce that David Garner, EHS Division Director, has obtained his Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) certification! Congratulations to David on this accomplishment. At Walden, we encourage staff at all levels to further their education and learning and seek opportunities for professional growth. We are delighted to celebrate when our team reaches milestones such as this!

What Is a CHMM?

The Certified Hazardous Materials Manager certification is issued by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM). First granted in 1984, this certification recognizes professionals who are hazardous materials experts. A CHMM is also considered an “Environmental Professional” under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 40 CFR § 312.10.

CHMMs are highly knowledgeable about the complex array of rules and regulations governing hazardous materials management. To attain this certification, several eligibility requirements must be met. These include:

  • A passing score on the CHMM exam
  • A baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited institution
  • At least four years of experience in hazardous materials management, including tasks such as:
    • Identification and handling
    • Emergency response and planning
    • Program and project management
    • Site investigation and remediation
    • Waste, soil, air, and water sampling and analysis
    • Other relevant responsibilities

Once someone becomes a CHMM, they must show that they are staying current in the field in order to maintain their certification.
