New Nationwide Funding for Brownfield Technical Assistance and Providers

by | Dec 6, 2022

The EPA is now accepting requests for applications for $57 million in funding for two Brownfield technical assistance opportunities. The first is for Brownfields Technical Assistance and Research cooperative agreements and the second is for Technical Assistance to Brownfield communities. The grant funding comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, with the goal of expanding community planning, remediation, and revitalization of Brownfield sites nationwide, while supporting economic development.

Brownfields Technical Assistance and Research Cooperative Agreements

Requests for applications for the Technical Assistance and Research cooperative agreements are being divided into the following five categories as specified in EPA’s November 22, 2022 press release:

    • Provide Nationwide Technical Assistance for Brownfield Revolving Loan Fund Programs;
    • Provide Technical Assistance to Nonprofits Seeking to Reuse Brownfields;
    • Technical Assistance to Local Government Leaders on Developing and/or Operating Brownfield Programs Within Their Jurisdictions;
    • Research, Technical Assistance, and Related Outreach on Minimizing Displacement Resulting from Brownfields Assessment, Cleanup and Reuse; or
    • Research, Technical Assistance and Related Outreach on Land Banking Approaches for Brownfields Revitalization.

Applicants are eligible to apply for more than one of the activities listed above. Approximately $4 million in funding will be awarded ($500,000 to $1 million for each of the five activities listed above) under these agreements which will extend over four years.

Technical Assistance to Brownfields

The Technical Assistance to Brownfields program will be funded by $5 million grants within each of the ten EPA regions. The objective is to provide training and technical assistance to communities who wish to cleanup and revitalize their Brownfield sites. The EPA will award a total of $50 million over a 5-year period. An additional $3 million will be allocated for nationwide support.

Who Can Apply?

These grants are open to all communities and stakeholders that wish to redevelop their Brownfield sites. Local governments and communities who haven’t yet benefited from EPA Brownfield investments are especially encouraged to apply.

The EPA will be conducting a webinar for prospective applicants for the Technical Assistance to Brownfields program (TAB) on December 7, 2022 from 1-2:30 pm EST via Zoom. There will be a webinar for Brownfields Technical Assistance and Research cooperative agreements applicants on December 8, 2022 from 1-2:30 pm EST via Zoom.
