Lockout Procedures

Keep your team safe and keep machines predictable with clear, machine-specific lockout procedures that meet OSHA 1910.147. Walden’s EHS division can help by building and rolling out energy control procedures that your team will find easy to use. Whether you have equipment with no procedures or procedures that need to be updated and clarified, our safety specialists can develop a program tailored exactly to your needs.

OSHA requires machine-specific procedures for isolating hazardous energy and verifying isolation in its Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) standard. It also requires you to review these procedures every year by observing an authorized employee lock out the equipment and correcting any deficiencies you find. These projects can be time-consuming and pull attention away from running your business. Walden can take on the responsibility and give you peace of mind that your team is protected and you are in compliance.

What We Deliver

A Walden EHS specialist will arrive at your facility and will start by mapping every source of hazardous energy on each machine. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Electrical energy
  • Mechanical energy
  • Hydraulic energy
  • Pneumatic energy
  • Chemical energy
  • Thermal energy
  • Gravity energy
  • Stored energy (like springs or pressure vessels)
  • Ionizing and non-ionizing radiation energy

For each asset, we create a simple procedure with photos that gives step-by-step instructions for where and how to isolate, how to lock, how to release stored energy, and how to perform a tryout before work begins. The result is a set of machine-specific procedures that are easy to follow and meet 1910.147(c)(4).

Our Proven Build Process

Walden’s EHS specialists will do the following when building your LOTO program:

  • Inventory equipment, verify nameplates, and trace energy paths to each isolation point
  • Label and number those isolation points so the procedure matches the machine
  • Identify the equipment necessary to isolate each energy source so you know what is needed before you start the job
  • Write the procedures in plain English for how to shut down, isolate, try out, and restore energy, with photos of each isolation point
  • Test the procedure with your mechanics and operators to ensure nothing is missed

Closing the Compliance Loop

Walden can conduct annual inspections to ensure that each procedure stays accurate. We can also write and review your LOTO program to be sure it covers often overlooked topics like shift changes, handoffs, cutting a lock, group lockout, and outside contractors.

In addition, Walden’s EHS team can lead both awareness and authorized-user training and can document when authorized users complete a hands-on LOTO as part of their training.

In all of our work, we provide clear documentation of each step to make audits, inspections, and insurance visits less stressful.
