How Walden Helps Employees Develop Their Skills
One of our core values at Walden is curiosity/professional development. Walden provides many opportunities for its employees to continue learning, growing, and pursuing professional interests.
Employee Training
We offer several forms of training for employees. Project management training sessions allow workers to develop soft skills, such as communication, delegation, empathy, and time management, which help them to become stronger leaders. Walden also offers training to employees through our subscription to Udemy, an online learning platform offering a huge range of courses for all skill levels. We subscribed to Udemy in 2020 to help employees use their time productively while working remotely, allowing them to brush up on skills such as Excel, management and leadership, and AutoCAD. New hires also gain a deeper understanding of AutoCAD through one-on-one training sessions with our in-house AutoCAD specialist. In these sessions, employees have the opportunity to improve their CAD skills and learn about some of the templates that we use at Walden.
Educational Sessions
Staff are encouraged to attend Walden’s “lunch and learn” series, in which our very own employees host sessions that cover topics such as technological and regulatory changes. A common topic in these “lunch and learns” is HAZWOPER refresher training, to ensure that our technical staff completes the annual 8-hour refresher requirement and to keep safety top of mind. However, we also cover a wide range of other topics: in the past, we have discussed important project developments, our work with drones, and COVID safety and stress management techniques. New hires meetings are also held every other week. These are similar to the “lunch and learn” sessions, and allow employees in their first year to become familiar with many different facets of the work that we do at Walden, learning about topics that are outside of their areas of expertise. Some recent new hires meeting topics included marketing, lab analysis, and the hydrogeology of Long Island.
Out-of-Office Learning
Walden also helps support employees who are interested in learning outside of the office. Recently, several of our staff completed a nine-hour Hofstra University course focusing on finance basics related to rate studies and utility valuations. Our employees are eligible for tuition reimbursement if they want to go back to school to attain an advanced degree in a field related to their work at Walden. The firm also encourages staff to join and participate in professional organizations. Financial support is available for workers who are seeking professional licensure, as well. Our NYS-licensed professional engineers (PEs) also complete a number of hours of professional development training every year to ensure that they are staying current with license requirements.
