EPA Grant Funding Available for Public Water System Cybersecurity
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has $9.5 million in grant funding available for mid- and large-sized public water systems for a variety of projects under the Midsize and Large Drinking Water System Infrastructure Resilience and Sustainability Program.
The EPA tentatively will award funds in the spring of 2026, but no firm date has been set as of the writing of this blog post. Mid-sized systems are defined as greater than 10,000 individuals but less than 100,000; large-sized systems are defined as greater than 100,000 individuals.
Eligible projects must increase the resilience of public water systems to natural hazards or extreme weather events, or reduce cybersecurity vulnerabilities.
A major emphasis of the EPA’s grant funding program for public water systems is the implementation of basic cyber hygiene practices that aid a utility in detecting and addressing cyberattacks. Some examples of eligible cybersecurity projects include conducting network risk assessments, making infrastructure improvements, completing technological updates, and implementing cybersecurity practices.
The deadline for applications is October 6, 2025, and applications must be submitted through grants.gov under opportunity number EPA-OW-OGWDW-25-01, assistance listing number 66.488.
The EPA held an informational webinar on August 19 to provide an overview of the grant program, the application process, eligible entities, and eligible project types. You can access a recording of this webinar (and read more about the program) here.
