An Introduction to Environmental Data Management Systems
In 2025, technological advancements are leading the way in simplifying everyday tasks. Environmental Data Management Systems, or EDMS, are doing just that for environmental sampling. EDMS are utilized to streamline the collection, management, and reporting of environmental data using efficient and cost-effective methods. All stages of the process, from sampling to analysis, are tracked, and clients receive updates via email or text.
Stages of an EDMS
There are multiple stages involved in an EDMS, including scheduling/sample planning, data collection, lab analysis, and reporting.
- The scheduling and sample planning stage can be used for singular or recurring sampling events, depending on the client’s needs. The frequency of the samples depends on the site and the job description.
- The data collection stage includes recording detailed sampling information and sampling photographs.
- The lab analysis stage involves monitoring the samples during shipping, tracking their arrival at the laboratory, noting when analysis is scheduled to begin and end, and recording the completion of the final report.
- Lastly, the reporting stage includes reporting the lab analysis results in an organized manner. The final deliverables may be presented in tabular or graph format, depending on the client’s needs.
What Kind of Sampling Data Can EDMS Keep Track Of?
EDMS can be used to assist in the collection of air, water, and soil quality samples. Some examples of types of samples that can be tracked by EDMS are:
- Air particulates
- Equipment emissions
- Groundwater
- Drinking water
- Wastewater
- Soil
Specifically related to soil, EDMS can be used for solid waste clients who are required to sample fill material on a regular basis. These systems help those clients organize and keep track of the results that they receive from each sample.
An example of a Data Management System that is regularly utilized to organize lab results for our Part 360 clients is the EQuIS software. This software easily lays out lab results in a standardized manner to send over to the NYSDEC for overview.
