Field data (and lots of it) is omnipresent in the environmental consulting and engineering industries.
Weeks, months, and even years of field investigations and sampling data must be retained and carefully organized for future use. One way to make this work is to use a generic data management system.
However, there are industry-specific programs known as environmental data management systems (EDMS) that far outperform generic programs. An EDMS such as EQuIS™ has the capability to streamline and expedite project planning, real-time remote data logging, analytical QA/QC, and compiling data from various otherwise non-linked sources.
EDMS programs serve as a collaborative tool where multiple individuals or companies working together on a project can share and retrieve information in real time. Large-scale projects require careful collaboration between engineers, general contractors, specialty contractors, and land developers. An EDMS has the capability to store all pertinent, up-to-date information in a centralized location, allowing all parties quick access.
Several grant programs available through New York State’s Consolidated Funding Application (CFA) provide funding opportunities for eligible projects that improve planning and data collection. These include:
*DEC/EFC Wastewater Infrastructure Engineering Planning Grant: this grant provides funding for the planning of eligible water quality improvement projects. Municipalities with median household incomes equal to or less than $85,000 in the Mid-Hudson, New York City, and Long Island are eligible; for all other regions, the cutoff is $65,000.
*Water Quality Improvement Project (WQIP) Program: this grant focuses on improving documented water quality impairments and is open to local governments and non-profits. A specific category within this grant is Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4), and the State notes “comprehensive system mapping/program mapping” as an eligible project type.
*The Climate Smart Communities Grant Program: part of the Environmental Protection Fund, this grant is intended to decrease vulnerability to climate change and future extreme climate conditions. Applicable project types include “extreme event preparation” and “reduction of vehicle miles travelled”, both of which can be tackled using an EDMS.
Applications for the aforementioned grants are all due on July 27, 2018.
