NYSDEC Issues Updated Stormwater Management Design Manual
On July 31, 2024, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) issued an updated Stormwater Management Design Manual. The manual outlines standards to be used by environmental professionals in the design of Stormwater Management Practices (SMPs) for stormwater treatment systems in new developments. The use of SMPs by construction site managers and land owners helps to protect the waters of New York State from the adverse impacts of urban stormwater runoff.
While the requirements set forth in the latest design manual do not apply to sites covered under the current Construction General Permit (GP-0-20-001), designers are encouraged to begin using the 2024 design manual for SWPPP development at construction sites.
Chapters of note in the manual include but are not limited to runoff reduction techniques, stormwater management practices, urban stormwater management, redevelopment, impacts of new development, addressing pollutants of concern and sizing criteria for sites. An example of helpful tools found in the manual includes tables that describe the different types of appropriate manufactured control systems to treat stormwater runoff. Knowing the correct type of system to install will help keep a site in compliance and help reduce risk of flooding. Click here to visit NYSDEC’s website, where you can access the updated manual.
The design of stormwater management systems and programs is site-specific in nature and is a crucial part of many development projects both during and after construction. Walden’s experienced engineers and environmental scientists are well versed in the design and implementation of SMPs.
