December 10, 2014 — Walden announces merger with Shapiro Engineering with Walden. This exciting news increases the range and depth of services that are available to clients of both companies.
From Shapiro Engineering, we are pleased to introduce Robert LoPinto, Milana Kononenko, Ludmila Suchkova and Lawrence Zeman.
Bob LoPinto, P.E. is a seasoned engineer who Walden is proud to have join our staff. He has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, an M.E. in Environmental Engineering from Manhattan College, and is a graduate of the US Army Command and General Staff College. Bob has served on numerous waste and recycling advisory boards and is a professor of Military Science at Hofstra University. He also served his country as a Division Engineer Supply Officer in Vietnam. Bob has been President of Shapiro Engineering in Valley Stream, NY since 1995, after serving in the Army Corps of Engineers for 21 years. His expertise includes system design and compliance for wastewater; hazardous waste; air pollution and solid waste; field Inspection and on-site audits of industrial facilities; laboratory management; field noise measurements and noise mitigation system design; and engineering/technical report preparation.
Milana Kononenko, P.E. has been with Shapiro Engineering since 2004 as an Environmental Engineer, Mechanical Design Engineer and Project Manager. Walden is pleased to have Milana join our staff as a Senior Project Manager. She has an M.S. in Environmental Technology from New York Institute of Technology and a combined Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from Kharkov State Technical University of Civil Engineering and Architecture (formerly Kharkov Institute of Civil Engineering), Kharkov, Ukraine. Drawing on her experience at Shapiro Engineering, she is well-versed in all aspects of environmental consulting, including preparation of engineering plans; reports and applications including Environmental Assessment Statements; Phase I and Phase II Reports; Engineering Reports; Health and Safety Plans; Annual and Final Reports; and SARA & Hazardous Waste Reports in accordance with corresponding local, city, state and federal standards and requirements. Milana is also experienced in Soil and Groundwater Sampling, Storm Water Detention and Treatment; and Remediation.
Ludmila Suchkova has served as Chief Draftsperson for Shapiro Engineering since 2000. She has over fourteen years’ experience design drafting industrial facilities using various versions of AutoCAD, and she has performed drafting for a variety of disciplines, including electrical, plumbing, structural and mechanical for both commercial and industrial buildings. She has completed advanced coursework in AutoCAD training from the American Training Center, Inc. Ludmila’s duties also include Department of Building (DOB) form preparation and filing. She is also well-versed in the preparation of NYC Community Right-To-Know filings.
Lawrence Zeman, Lab Director, Microbiology Director and Environmental Specialist for Shapiro Engineering, has almost 20 years of experience in the environmental field. Lawrence has been consulting on difficult laboratory issues and QA/QC review for many years, and Walden is very happy to add his laboratory know-how to our knowledge base. Lawrence received his B.A. in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry, from Queens College. He is extremely knowledgeable in areas as diverse as regulatory compliance, test protocol development and implementation, management of instrument repair and maintenance, field inspections and on-site audits, correlation studies of various analyses and engineering/technical reporting.

Joseph Heaney, III, P.E, founded Walden in 1995 on the principles of integrity, professionalism, cost-effective services, trust, social responsibility, and profitability. Walden provides civil and environmental professional engineering services for a NY/NJ/PA-based client list.
As Principal, Joe provides supervision and direction for all technical operations of Walden Associates to ensure that we meet our client’s goals.
Under Joe’s leadership, Walden has grown into the successful company it is today. He has overseen major projects in numerous sectors and was directly responsible for the strategic direction and implementation of many. Joe is an expert at managing the environmental compliance needs of municipalities, industrial clients and providing expertise and advice to law firms. With his experience and vast regulatory knowledge on environmental compliance issues and their affect on business operations, Joe provides Walden’s clients with quick, decisive, and tangible recommendations for addressing complex problems.
Joe has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Lafayette College and a M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Manhattan College. He is a Professional Engineer licensed in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania.
