Walden Teaches Safety and Career Skills at Nassau County BOCES

Walden is proud to have recently completed instructing the first cohort of the Environmental Technician Training Program at the Nassau County Board of Cooperative Educational Services. The program ran for five weeks from September 21st to October 20th and consisted of classes three nights per week. Ten of the sessions provided both classroom and hands-on OSHA training to the students, while the other five sessions provided valuable career development resources to the students. The class was taught by Joseph Heaney, PE & CSP, Massi Lelli CSP, Erica Johnston, and Louis Goldstein of Walden.

A unique feature of this program is the added value of the career development portion of the class. These sessions included resume building, interview skill development, a goal setting workshop, and financial planning. Additionally, Walden partnered with several companies in the environmental field who came in during the career development classes to share their expertise as well as to explain what a “day in the life” at their company is like. Presenters included Lakewood Environmental, JLC Environmental, Eastern Environmental Solutions, Long Island Analytical Laboratories, and Clean Harbors who gave insight into the environmental drilling, inspection, remediation, monitoring and analytical services they provide. Our partnering firms accepted resumes from the students and will be interviewing several of them!

Walden is pleased to announce that eleven students attended the class and received their OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certificates. The students obtained this valuable training along with several items of Personal Protective Equipment at no cost thanks to funding from the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery. We congratulate them all for taking a proactive step towards a career in the environmental field, and look forward to hearing of their successes.
