sfe_th_slider_nailsNew York State Governor, Andrew Cuomo, announced a new ventilation standard for all nail salons in the state that will protect employees and customers. This requirement will go into effect October 2016.

After The Department of Health reported that there are potentially harmful chemicals in nail products that can cause short and long term health consequences for workers, Cuomo decided that these new regulations would be the best way to address the situation.

 These requirements will include:

-Supplying fresh outdoor air sufficient to remove all chemicals, vapors, fumes, dust and other air contaminants from the air as well as exhaust them safely outdoors.
-A ventilation system must assure that no exhaust air will be re-circulated into the salon or into any other space into the building.

-Requires specific exhaust systems at all manicure and pedicure work stations.

All nail salons and any other business that provides nail services, such air hair salons being licensed as of October 3, 2016 will be required to meet these standards. Salons licensed before October 3, 2016 will have until October 3, 2021 (an additional 5 years) to comply with these regulations.

The Department of States Division of Licensing Services will be holding a series of meetings in the upcoming weeks to explain the new regulations for businesses being affected.
